In the frame of this action, ITU scientists aim at developing a profound understanding of actinides and actinide compounds’ properties, including their electronic structure, equation of state and phase diagrams, solution chemistry, interface and surface phenomena. Through its various training and users programmes, ITU welcomes bright young professionals needed not only to keep the fission option open, but also to maintain the high level of scientific competence needed to support the safety of existing plants and the technical competence needed by the regulatory bodies.
ITU collects and evaluates data on properties and applications of transuranium elements. It develops and validates new methods/equipment for the analysis of actinides in alloys, compounds, fresh and irradiated fuel. It also provides encapsulated samples for external organisation research programmes.
The scientific equipment of the Institute and the related support is open to scientists from external laboratories and universities in the frame of the ‘Actinide User Laboratory’ programme.
ITU sustains the transmission knowledge in basic actinide science by serving as a training laboratory for students or young scientists from those countries of the European Union where such facilities do not exist and in organising summer schools and international workshops in the field.
